Bycatch

Bycatch, in the fishing industry, is a fish or other marine species that is caught unintentionally while fishing for specific species or sizes of wildlife. Bycatch is either the wrong species, the wrong sex, or is undersized or juveniles of the target species. The facts is millions of sea creatures die needlessly each year because they get caught up in large undescriminating nets. Sea turtles, Sharks and Dolphins and many other species are affected by this problem. Its' so bad many of these species are becoming endangered and if the current course is continued we may be in a position of species actually becoming extinct. Sharks appear to be most at risk in bycatch. Many sharks caught in the nets are then illegally "Finned" and thrown back to die. While the act of shark finning is illegal in U.S. waters, shark fins continue to be bought and sold throughout the United States. Currently Shark Fin sales is banned in 14 US states and while that is a start we are asking for Federal guidlines effectively banning the sale nationally.
